The Fourth Trimester

Dear Fourth trimester Mama,
It is not just a baby that is born but a mother is born too. Labour is your initiation into motherhood whether you have a vaginal delivery, a c-section, gas and air or an epidural. The end result is the same. You are left feeling overwhelmed whether it be with love, anxiety or fear.

New mamas are put under so much pressure to feel an overwhelming sense of love immediately after birth. I didn’t feel that. I felt exhausted. I felt broken. I felt dazed. This is NORMAL. The love for me came later in, what is known as, the fourth trimester. This is the first three months after birth where you and your baby need time to get to know each other. Get to grips with breastfeeding (if that’s what you’re doing).

Don’t be afraid to say no to visitors. To barricade yourself inside a bubble. There are always two arrivals after birth. The baby and the mother. They both need love and care. Unless you’re going round to care for them both; keep your distance for now.

For those mamas feeling blue it will pass and if it doesn’t please reach out to a loved one or a stranger. Don’t be left feeling guilty because you are a newborn too.
